Why shipping can cost more than the item: China–Israel checklist

The community question

A community member buying from a US-only shop questioned shipping charges exceeding the item price. We apply that cost-comparison question to China–Israel planning; the thread is not evidence of US forwarding services offered by Israelepost.

Compare the parcel, not just the purchase price

An inexpensive item can occupy a large carton or require several handling steps. Start with final packed length, width, height, gross weight and package count rather than the product’s catalogue dimensions. Ask the supplier whether the quoted size includes protective packaging. Then request a transport quote for those same measurements and the actual destination postcode. Product price alone cannot tell you whether direct dispatch, a forwarding warehouse or a different transport service is the better option.

Check chargeable weight with an explicit assumption

DHL Express describes charging by the greater of actual and volumetric weight, with its published example using centimetres divided by 5,000. As an illustration, a 50 × 40 × 30 cm carton gives 12 kg at that divisor; if it weighs 4 kg, the illustrative chargeable weight is 12 kg before any applicable rounding. This is not a freight price or a universal divisor. Ask the selected carrier to confirm its divisor, minimum charge and rounding rules for your service.

Build an end-to-end comparison

Put each option on the same worksheet: supplier-to-warehouse transport, receiving, storage, repacking if requested, international carriage, destination handling and final delivery. Keep quoted exclusions visible and ask the responsible provider to confirm any import-related amounts. Record currency and quote validity for each line. An unknown amount is not zero, and amounts in different currencies should not be added without a stated conversion. When consolidation deserves a quote

If several suppliers will deliver around the same time, ask for a separate consolidation proposal and compare its full cost with separate dispatches. Request final package measurements after any repacking, and agree who approves paid work. Include the time spent waiting for the last supplier and any storage charges. Combining parcels does not guarantee savings: the resulting size, product compatibility and handling needs may change the outcome. Do not remove packaging needed for protection or required product handling merely to reduce volume.

Prepare the supplier locations in China, ready dates, item descriptions, packed measurements and Israeli destination. Disclose batteries, liquids or other special cargo characteristics before selecting a route. State whether you want a direct-shipping comparison, an optional consolidation quote or both, and give your latest useful arrival date. The result should identify service scope, exclusions and the next confirmation required. A cheaper headline rate only helps when the complete scope meets the shipment’s actual needs.
