Get a separate written record for each storage or container-use charge: issuer, applicable booking terms, start event, end event, counting rule and last free day. Then plan collection, unloading and empty gate-in against the relevant deadlines. One free-time figure does not describe every charge.
The community question
A public Facebook question asks whether four free days after arrival also cover the time until the empty container is returned. Replies mention different allowances without establishing the terms of that shipment. The useful lesson is to identify the charge and its start and end events, not to adopt a number from a comment. This is a community question, not an Israelepost shipment record.

Start with the exact fee name and the party billing it. Terminal storage concerns the space occupied at a terminal. In commonly separated arrangements, demurrage concerns container time inside the terminal and detention concerns the period outside it before empty return; local contracts may combine the two. These labels are a starting point for questions, not a substitute for the applicable definitions. Ask whether storage is separate from the line’s container-use charge and whether any quoted allowance covers one or both. Keep separate rows even if a forwarding provider collects several charges on one invoice.
Use a carrier example within its stated scope
Maersk’s Israel import page describes combined demurrage and detention from discharge of the full container through empty-container gate-in, counting calendar days and including both endpoint days. It treats terminal storage separately. The page also states that its standard terms do not apply to Maersk Spot bookings. This is a useful illustration of why gate-out is not necessarily the end of the relevant clock. It is not a rule for every shipping line, terminal or booking. Obtain the terms attached to your own booking, including any agreed extension, and ask the provider which version and equipment category apply.
Ask for a last free day for each applicable charge
For every row, record the booking and container references, tariff or agreement version, start event, end event and the confirmed event dates. Ask whether the first and last day count, whether the allowance uses calendar or working days, and which local cut-off time applies. Request the resulting last free day in writing from the party responsible for that charge. Record storage and container-use deadlines separately. If an extension is offered, obtain its scope, approval reference and revised deadline; do not assume it changes another provider’s charge. An arrival estimate alone is insufficient for this record, and this guide does not calculate a payable amount.
Separate customs, line release and physical collection
Build three readiness questions before the vessel arrives. Ask the customs contact what information or action is still outstanding. Ask the shipping line or authorized agent what shipment-release instructions remain to be completed. Ask the terminal and haulier whether the container is available for collection and what booking or access arrangement is needed. A reply that one stage is complete should not be treated as confirmation of the others. Put an owner and next action against every unresolved item, alongside the expected discharge date and the written free-time terms. Share changes with the party arranging pickup so a truck is not booked on an unconfirmed release assumption.
Plan unloading and empty return before pickup
Confirm the receiving address, unloading appointment, site opening hours and equipment required. Then obtain the authorized empty-return location and check whether an appointment, reference or specific receiving window is needed there. Ask the haulier which evidence will confirm full-container gate-out and empty-container gate-in, and who sends it to the booking contact. If the designated depot changes or cannot accept the container, request updated written instructions and retain the original appointment and response. Do not treat delivery to the consignee, completion of unloading or the driver starting the return journey as proof that empty gate-in has occurred.
Keep a dated exception record when the plan slips
Record a customs query, unavailable collection slot, failed delivery appointment or rejected return as a specific event with a date, contact and supporting reference. Ask the party billing the affected charge what effect, if any, that event has under the applicable terms and what action is now required. A complaint or an open service case is not written confirmation of an extension. Request a revised deadline if one is granted and circulate it to the release contact, haulier and receiving site. This record helps reconcile a later bill without presuming who caused the delay or whether any charge must be waived.
Put the deadlines beside the quote, not inside a guess
For a China–Israel sea-freight enquiry, include the line or proposed service, container type, port, delivery address, importer contact and unloading constraints. Use the sea-freight quote review to identify included, excluded and unconfirmed cost items, then keep this deadline record beside it. Enter only confirmed amounts in a cost comparison and preserve their currency and basis. The team can review the requested coordination scope; the website does not retrieve terminal availability, extend free time or instruct a shipping line automatically. Close the record with actual gate-out and empty gate-in evidence, rather than with the planned dates alone.
